Diamond turning is an ultra-precise manufacturing process where the computer controlled cutting tools are used to shape and polish the workpiece with extreme precision. The parts produced in diamond turning have astonishingly high surface quality and accuracy. The axes of control in the diamond turning tool allow flexibility of the workpiece, resulting in precision production of highly complex shapes and features, including dreeform surface and non-axisymmetric shapes.
Metrology plays an important role in precision optics by ensuring that the optical components meet the required specifications for a particular application. Interferometry is commonly used to measure the surface quality and surface figure of optical components such as mirrors and lenses. The measurements obtained through interferometry are used to ensure that the optical components meet the necessary specifications for advanced applications.
